Re: [MTC Global] RE: India a view point

Posted on 22:21 by Unknown
It goes without saying: I'm not against "welfare schemes" as such, but I'm deadly against the usual schemes which are "welfare" on the surface but exploitative and disadvantageous for sustainable development, MGNRGA only one of (the many). All of these are highly misused, and they don't help building up sustainable change in the future. At the best, they patch up what is needed at a given moment, i.e. reacting but not acting, no vision in planning, no vision at all. Most of the "welfare schemes" keep people in dependency, and this continues.

I believe Irmel V Marla will also be not against welfare schemes. What we have been talking of reservation and perhaps underlying concern is that reservation is at the cost some other merit holder – hence it goes against the principle of equal opportunities.

I have something to say on the ongoing discussion:

Though, being a student of economics, I don't  fully agree with Prof AKSEN I do feel some safety mechanism has to be kept in place for protecting the weeker sections.

We can't simply brush aside all the welfare schemes. For instance Aarogyasri scheme (for the medical treatment of poor) has proved quite useful to the poor in Andhra Pradesh. While developmental/growth initiatives are called for side by side we need to provide certain safeguards (we have committed to the concept of welfare state)as well lest some people will suffer.

Dear Shri Goel,

of course: if there are equal opportunities in reality, no reservation and/or other artificial humbug is needed! Only, the decision makers at all levels don't want this, and this the crux of all the failed (pseudo) "welfare" schemes and whatnot. Eyewash, in my opinion.

Reservation is but a band-aid for a deep wound where band-aid won't help at all, but is the reason for the wound to fester further! We all seem to have got used to it, and "political correctness" is the most evil mantra to protect the existing inequality. By the way: supported by all political parties in their greed for power and money.

Greetings,

In order to meet the equal opportunity to all, we need to provide same opportunities in the village that are available in the city, equal opportunity for BPL that is available to elite of the nation, equal opportunity to a factory worker that is available to a mill owner, equal opportunity to women that is available to men – Is reservation only hurdle to the lack of equal opportunities?

Dear Shri Goel,

reservation/quota systems are always adverse to sound, meritorious development. That is why it cannot be substituted by any other type of reservation system, it can only be abolished. Equal opportunities to all, that is what is needed and for this, Indian society has to mature in a strong civil society without superstitions and the like. Alas, our educational institutions purport superstitions and all concepts/ideologies/religions related to these. We have to fight exactly on this front, not compromising on more 'convenient' issues. Committed, enlightened teachers could be at the forefront - but: where are they???

Greetings,
