RE: [MTC Global] Is skill gap is an universal phenomenon or more...

Posted on 05:45 by Unknown

Skill development is different to knowledge and I do not see any such curriculum where skill development is included either at school or higher education be it soft skills or professional skills. I see lot of management, institutes, university, government and teachers’ thrashing but where is the solution?

One of the main reason behind increasing gap is decreasing quality of professional education. Many of the private colleges imparting professional degrees are mainly guided by earning more and more profits. Running after profits, they forget to maintain quality education. On the one hand, they go on increasing seats for students to have more earnings and on the other hand they try to hire teachers at lowest possible salaries even compromising at quality. Resultant large number of students came out with professional degrees, but without any value addition. Here arises the gap between the talent supply and industry requirement.

This is a universal problem with most of the third world countries with magnitude being varied. Coming to our case from the beginning the emphasis was not that much on vocational education. We are blindly producing thousands and thousands of graduates and postgraduates without taking into account our actual requirements thereby often causing disguised unemployment (not limited to agriculture alone).

The other one is we never attempted seriously a manpower plan (may be approximately atleast given the size of our country) so that we produce what we actually require.

With regard to teachers we don't have a rigorous/meticulous system, like the one Finland has, whereby only committed and passionate ones enter this noble profession. But some good samaritans, like sampark training teachers in Punjab, have taken the initiative and doing their bit but yes the pace needs to be hastened.

Lastly we can't say that the teaching community as a whole is change resistant with experience of Rajasthan to some well thought out initiatives. Yes Delhi dhoorhi magar mushkilbhi nahihai.

Let's all pull together our resources amd do what best we can in this desired direction.

The gap between knowledge & skills is very much entrenched in the Indian educational system (other countries, like UK and their former colonies suffer also from it), and the mindset & attitudes of the average Indian is completely outdated: a lower clerk who spends his/her worktime by carrying around dusty files will contemptuously look down upon a mechanic who is doing most demanding and sophisticated work! Presently, I am implementing a model "Dual System of Professional Training", modified to Indian conditions from the very successful German system - this will enhance employment opportunities as it exposes students to the real work-life, thus providing a standardised high level of quality knowledge & skills and subsequently high performance.

It is mainly the teachers who don't understand (or won't) the requirements of enterprises for their workforce as they have no experiences whatsoever of real work-places and, what makes matters worse, they are just not interested, they are extremely change-resistent!
